What a fantastic and busy week!
Literacy
The students continued to learn the French letter sounds this week. We are working on the consonants, having finished the vowels two weeks ago. As well, the students are identifying vowel/consonant and consonant/vowel combinations in the daily message. We sing a song where we combine the consonant with the vowel. It goes:
l avec a fait la
l avec e fait le
l avec i fait li
avec o fait lo
avec. u fait lu
la, le, li, lo, lu!
We substitute the consonant we are studying in the song as we learn.
Students continue to write messages in the agenda by using a framework given to them and brainstorming possible ideas to complete the sentence. I am seeing progress in the independence shown in the students' writing.
In our daily NLA practice this past week, the students asked eachother the question: "est-ce que tu manges....?" and answered with "je mange.....les bonbons." by filling in the qualifier: souvent, parfois, jamais.
Mathematics
Thank you for the pumpkins. They gave our class lots of fun learning tasks, including: measuring, comparing and counting. LOTS of counting. Our pumpkins had over 400 seeds! The students worked in groups to count, illustrate and total the sums of seeds. There was learning about how to work as a group and best ways to count and record high numbers.
During our Coulee visit, the students used their beaded number lines to measure things in nature!
Social Studies
While at the Coulee, we met with Sa'akokoto. He taught us words in Blackfoot based on the theme of Autumn. We are so grateful to share in his calming wisdom.
As well, the students practised a visualization of what Calgary might have once looked like in preparation to study our past.
Art
The students met and worked with Karen, our Nature Artist. They made different creations out of...nature!
In class, we have completed 2 art projects over the past month. We drew leaves from various trees and used the watercolour crayons and water to make impressive displays. Pictures to come!
Physical Education
Our Phys.Ed focus for the past month has been "locomotion". The students have participated in various games of tag (my favourite was: Zombie tag) as well as games such as What Time is it, Mr. Wolf and Red Light, Green Light. It's so good to get outside and move!
School wide events
Even in the snow, the Pumpkin Patch was amazing to see. We had fun identifying our favourites while doing the tour! Lots of pictures to come! And, the best thing of all - a Flashlight Story read by Mr. Tomcyk!
